As I read these stories, the aspect of settler colonialism that often reappears is a foundation in fear. For most colonial history from the western perspective, it was always seen as saving the natives and giving them refined governance and means of production, wherein reality these settlers disturb the natural ecosystem that has evolved in particular regions over time. With settler colonialism in Hawaii, we see an example of a western force “saving the natives”, but then in completely ruining the sociopolitical climate by instigating division within the multicultural community of Hawaii (the natives, the Chinese, and the Japanese.

Settler colonialism in this case instigated by the Americans in Hawaii, was claimed to be in defense of “yellow peril,” and to preemptively “protect” the Hawaiians. However this was just one of the many excuses used by the west to exert power over the colony. it is almost ironic in this regard that later in history, the Chinese were specifically brought in to work the plantations. This influx of workers formed a Chinese microcolony known as Chinatown. it is interesting that all over the world one of the most abundant foreign communities found is china town. From Hawaii to New york these microcosms of Chinese culture expand and become welcoming places for chinese abroad or have been displaced. This has put the reach of the chinese people almost in every country especially those colonized by the United stated and much of the Caribbean.

While these towns are born in desperation and originally by people who’s contracts have ended, they have today become staples in the community aswell as familiar sights for the Chinese across the world. The communities bread in terrible circumstances, today are regarded as cultural hotspots. I do not disagree that the settlement of many native peoples have been destroyed by that of settler colonialism, the practice brings rise to vibrant communities with individuality along with decades old local influence.

When we look at how eventually the Islands of Hawaii would become crucial in the American victory in WW2 is is easy to understand how the not very old colonial atrocities created, were swept under the rug and Hawaii became a pride of the united states and not one they could afford. Thus we see a very much conquered people sitting unhappy at the fingers of one of history “great liberators”
